I really like this video!
Thanks:) maybe it's a bit too enthousiastical and high-tech, but it shows well what Community Tools is about - bringing people out of the internet:) and helping to make a real change in the very local level.

Hi Madle, can you explain the detail behind Community Tools - how does it work, who created it, who is involved?

And where do I get one of those great touchscreen projecting computers? ;-)

behind the idea of CT is a neighborhood society in Tallinn: Uue Maailma Selts www.uusmaailm.ee As we grew very big (by number of members ca1200 and also different activities) we faced several problems. The biggest of them was how to keep people still active and connected and at the same time save them from information overload.

and the solution was CT - its an interactive website, a social network with its focus on locality, that anybody can install in his or her server. All content in the site is then produced by community members registered on the site. the core idea is that it consists of tools you can add to your page according to your needs: news, events, gallery etc and you can divide the communication between groups: parents, security issues, local shops etc.

check out or demo page http://demo.selts.eu/

we have been working it out in close connection with several other estonian communities.

yeah, I think you caught this interactive element of Web2.0 perfectly, because it is so essential to understand that Internet tools can help you getting out of theory into real life! and it is amazing what communities can do with it when they integrate datas and information in their social life.
Excellent vidoe
Till today all sites using Community tools are in Estonian but we have some very "good examples". Tallinn old town community www.vanalinnaselts.ee, small Viljandi town uses it for mapping ideas and problems  minu.viljandi.ee, site that unites ngos in Tallinn http://www.tallinnayhendused.ee/cm.... In those sites you can see, how different communities use it for everyday communication.
How can NGOs in concrete take part in this last mentionned site? It seems to be quite interesting and I like the photos, this makes a site really much more lifely  :-)

To take part, or more, to post info in the site you have to register - it is opened for all NGOs in Tallinn. we encourage them to post there every kind of information: their news, events, problems etc the latest and very interesting activity we have there is mapping ideas and problems in Tallinn public space http://www.tallinnayhendused.ee/cmtls/1/132 - and all the info is also visible on the map:)

Can people use it for coordinating volunteering at local level or maybe even things like care of older people in the community?

Yes, of course! for that you can make your group of volunteers or people who need help/want to help can post it on the "adds" or "volunteering" section.  if you explain me more clearly, what exactly do you need I can tell you how to use CT for it.

the reason, why I like CT is, that it is really flexible - all the tools are arranged by your needs.
