NCVO has identified climate change as one of the key challenges for the voluntary sector in the coming decades and we have made it one of our strategic priorities.
We would like to hear from other European support organisations that are interested in sharing ideas about how to help non-environmental voluntary and community organisations to understand the impact that climate change is likely to have on their beneficiaries and their work. We ran a pilot project on this issue in 2009 called The Big Response and are about to roll the work out with larger groups of organisations supporting vulnerable people.
But we are keen to learn about and test out other ideas for helping organisations to respond to this major societal challenge - whether that''s helping organisations to prepare for and adapt to climate change, or supporting them to help mitigate or prevent uncontrolled carbon emissions.
For an overview of our work on this topic, take a look at our website: www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/climatechange
Anyone interested in working with us?
Hi Kate,
Whilst it's not directly aimed at the voluntary sector, we're currently involved in a European project looking at greening SMEs. From the webpage you mentioned above- it seems that there are some similar issues. I think the key overlapping one is supporting small organisations to make change themselves- from raising the issue with them, to identifying areas for improvement, to implementing and continuing change, in a cost effective manner. Whilst we all know that saving resources can help save money, sometime it is difficult to see how that can be achieved without a large investment.
I've put a link to our website below, as it contains information which could be relevant to all organisations. In addition, we're holding a networking event next Thursday in Battersea, where the Carbon Trust, LSX, Waste Watch and other key agencies will be discussing ways to incentivise and support organisations to make changes. We will also have colleagues from Italy, Spain and South Denmark, who can shed some more light on their practices.
Thanks,
Rosie
