What is Participation for Change and the e-Mentoring scheme?

Participation for Change is a partnership project between organisations in the UK, Poland, Estonia, Slovenia and Germany, funded by the European Commission’s “Europe for Citizens” programme. Read more about Participation for Change.

The purpose of this project is to connect organisations working across Europe; for people working in those organisations to share their experiences and to learn from each other.

One of the ways that we will connect people is through an e-Mentoring scheme.

We have selected 16 people from across the UK, Poland, Slovenia, Estonia and Germany who have experience of working in the sector in their country. They want to share their experience with you, to help you through your issues and act as your mentor.

Who are the e-Mentors?

16 mentors have been chosen from across the UK, Germany, Poland, Estonia and Slovenia.

The mentors were selected because of their experience in one of the three selected topic areas (more information below) and because of their interest in cross Europe working.

Sarah Davies, Chief Executive, Futureversity

Anthea Clements, Chief Executive, Barry YMCA

Somanah Achadoo, Operations Director, Voluntary Action Camden

Danny Antrobus, Service Development Manager, South Yorkshire Funding Advice Bureau

From Slovenia:
Tina Divjak, Legal advisor, Center for information service, development and cooperation of NGOs
Sonia Markič, Director, Institute for New Age Education
Alenka Blazinšek, Mentor, CNVOS

From Estonia:
Maiko Kesküla, Adviser, Järvamaa Developing Centre
Viljo Vabrit, Recruitment Manager, Noored Kooli SA

From Germany:
Sabine Scheltwort, Communications Manager, Big Brothers Big Sisters Deutschland
Betty Wilke, Officer for Volunteer Work, German Red Cross
Meinolf von Spee, Director, Villa Lampe
Daniel Merdes, Project Manager, bagfa e.V.

From Poland:
Marcela Wasilewska, Coordinator of the European Programme, Federation of the Non-Governmental Organisations Centrum Szpitalna
Agnieszka Zowczak, Director, MAZOWIA Federation

What topic areas can the mentors offer support on?

At the very beginning of this project we identified challenges that are common to organisations in all of the partner countries.

These topics were finance and funding, working with people and working collaboratively with other organisations.

Funding and finance:
  • Generating income
  • Diversifying income
  • Accessing funding opportunities
  • Influencing how funders work
  • Models for financial sustainability

Working with people:
  • Employment law and compliance
  • Recruiting and working volunteers
  • Attracting people to your organisation
  • Raising awareness of the values of the sector
  • Promoting volunteering
  • Working with volunteers
  • Management
  • Leadership

Working collaboratively with other organisations:
  • Collaborative working
  • Membership engagement
  • New ways of working
  • Shared services
  • Merger

The mentors have been chosen because of their experience in these three areas and will only offer support in one or more of these three areas.

How will the mentoring work?

All of the mentoring will take place on the www.participationforchange.org website.

As this is a pilot project we will try out different tools (on the website) to help you connect with your mentor.

The project lasts until the beginning of December so realistically the mentoring will be short-term, approximately 5 months (July – November 2010).

Depending on how many people apply to be mentored and the topics that they want support on it might be a 1-to-1 relationship or it might take place within a group. We will ask you in the application form which you would prefer.

The mentors have committed to around 7 hours per month of mentoring activity, including evaluating with you how the mentoring is going.

How do I apply to be mentored?

There is an application form that you can download and email to louise.brown@ncvo-vol.org.uk.

The deadline for applications is 5.00pm on Thursday 24th June.

What are the criteria for taking part in this project?

For the purposes of the funding for this project, you need to work for a voluntary sector/ civil society organisation/ NGO in the UK, Poland, Slovenia, Estonia or Germany.

You need to want to work through an issue in one of the three identified areas; funding and finance, working with people, working collaboratively with other organisations.

It is preferable that you have an interest in learning more about how other organisations/ the voluntary sector works in Europe and are looking to apply that learning to your own organisation.

How will I be matched with my mentor?

When all of the applications have been received we will look to see what topic areas people want help in, what languages they can speak and how they would like to be mentored.

We will then make a first draft at matching the mentors and those wanting to be mentored.

We will be sharing that with the mentors to see if they’re happy with it before confirming it with you.

You will have a chance to appeal against the decision that we’ve made and throughout the mentoring you will be able to let us know if you are not happy with the mentoring.
